Keys, tableware, lighting, door handles, sofas, curtain rails, chairs – and even the building itself. Every element of the SAS Royal Hotel was crafted by Arne Jacobsen. His creations embody the principles of Total Design and Gesamtkunstwerk. Step into the history of Denmark’s first design hotel, which opened in 1960, and experience Room 606, preserved with its original furnishings.

Arne Jacobsen was a true pioneer. A bold and versatile designer, he embraced international trends as early as the 1920s—trends that were ahead of their time and remain contemporary even today.

The Danish Architecture Centre offers you the chance to delve into the legacy of Arne Jacobsen. Through a unique partnership with the SAS Royal Hotel (now known as the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel), we invite you to immerse yourself in his iconic designs.

The tour is divided into two segments: First, we meet at DAC, where you will be introduced to Arne Jacobsen’s work and his era through our exhibition So Danish! Following this, we’ll take a 1.5 km walk to the hotel. Once there, you’ll gain insight into a time when the hotel symbolized the first step on a journey from Denmark to the wider world.

You’ll also discover the story behind the design and construction of Denmark’s inaugural design hotel—a place where sophistication and jet-set glamour came together in a terminal adorned with orchids, Egg chairs, and Swan chairs.
