The former Absalon Church in Vesterbro has been transformed into Absalon – a vibrant gathering place for the local community. With over 50 weekly activities, a colorful interior designed by Tal R, and a relaxed retro atmosphere, the venue has established itself as a cornerstone of Vesterbro.

Walking into Absalon, it’s hard to imagine that this space was once filled with silence and sacredness. Originally built in 1934 by architects Arthur Wittmaack and Vilhelm Hvalsøe, the church was known for its twin towers and distinctive brickwork. However, where the church once stood empty and lifeless, it is now a hub for community and creativity.

A Church Reborn as a Community Center

The transformation of Absalon has preserved the architectural features of the church. The lofty ceilings and large arched windows remain intact. However, new elements have been added, such as a gallery and openings connecting different spaces. These modifications create an organic flow, allowing people and activities to move freely throughout the building.

A Burst of Color and Social Connection

Color is what truly sets Absalon apart. Artist Tal R, in collaboration with architect Allan Lyth, has created a collage of vibrant hues that wrap around the walls, ceilings, and staircases. The three stone moldings at the entrance arch have been painted in bright colors, while the chancel – now serving as a stage – features a striking red backdrop that adds dramatic flair while enhancing acoustics.

The colors and relaxed atmosphere make it easy to feel at home within the community. Every day, the house buzzes with life – from yoga and communal dining to concerts and creative workshops. The café, seamlessly integrated with the stage, serves as a central gathering spot, fostering both spontaneous encounters and planned activities.

A Transformation That Sounds as Good as It Looks

Beyond the colorful decor, the acoustics of Absalon Cultural House have been carefully designed. The once-overpowering reverberation of the church has been replaced with a balanced sound that makes the venue perfect for both concerts and everyday conversations. The red backdrop serves as a sound absorber, while the ceiling and windows have been acoustically optimized. As a result, Absalon is one of the rare large spaces where music can be enjoyed while still allowing for natural conversation without shouting.

Near Absalon

While visiting Absalon, don’t miss a trip to Værnedamsvej, often referred to as Copenhagen’s Little Paris. This charming street is home to French delicacies, both in terms of gastronomy and aesthetics. If you prefer industrial aesthetics with a minimalist and raw edge, head to Kødbyen, where you can experience art, nightlife, and gastronomy within the district’s historic slaughterhouse buildings.
