Grønningen-Bispeparken: From Gray Lawn to Green Oasis
Urban spaces
Between the apartment blocks Grønningen-Bispeparken spreads out like a breathing space away from congested roads. Take a break in the park’s orchards and follow the winding paths around the rainwater basins.
In Copenhagen’s Nordvest neighborhood, a barren 20,000-square-meter lawn has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, visitors are greeted by a vibrant green oasis, where wildflowers bloom along winding pathways, and children and the young at heart can play and relax under the shade of tree canopies.
Space for Nature and Water
Urban nature, fresh air, and play are the core elements of Grønningen-Bispeparken. The lush landscape weaves through the apartment blocks, creating cohesive spaces and resting spots for both visitors and locals.
When heavy rains pour down, the park’s 18 rainwater basins function as flood protection, capable of holding up to 3,000 cubic meters – approximately 3 million liters – of water. During dry periods, these basins transform into lively social spaces where both people and insects thrive.
Recycled Materials and Artistic Integration
To minimize the project’s climate impact, recycled materials have been used. The harsh asphalt has been replaced with warm surfaces like wood and yellow tiles, harmonizing with surrounding building facades and complementing Grundtvig’s Church, located just north of the park.
Artist Kerstin Bergendal has collaborated with locals to incorporate usable art, seamlessly integrated into the landscape, providing both aesthetic appeal and practical resting spots.
Near Grønningen-Bispeparken
From the park, views stretch toward Grundtvig’s Church, forming a beautiful backdrop on the horizon. Just a stone’s throw away lies Bispebjerg Cemetery, one of Copenhagen’s most visited green spaces, especially in spring when its iconic cherry trees are in full bloom. The pink blossoms create an enchanting tunnel along the cemetery’s avenues, setting the stage for the perfect Instagram photo.
