Nørrebro has over the past six years undergone a significant change to create new urban spaces and better urban life in the most densely populated neighbourhood of Copenhagen. New and distinguished squares, parks and buildings have emerged which this walk explores.
Outer Nørrebro currently sees great ventures such as the redevelopment scheme at ‘Mimersgade’ and the area around ‘Haraldsgade’. In addition, several inner courtyards have experienced a lift. The walk pictures the transformation of the old neighbourhoods in Copenhagen and new meeting old.
Our walk begins at the now energy renovated but historic ‘Osram house’, which today serves as a cultural center.
We will take a closer look at some examples of the renovation of subsidized housing and at the still visible signs of the industrial past in Nørrebro.
The newly built Mosque is essential to this part of Nørrebro, like the new green area ‘Mimer’s park’ at the former DSB area. It has its own story of citizen involvement. The park now has football fields, playgrounds and trees which make the former “nobody’s land” to a recreation area in the densely populated city part.
‘Superkilen’ by BIG is another great example of one of Nørrebros new urban spaces. The remarkably red square, which is partly a biking trail, has 57 different objects symbolizing the 57 different nationalities that are living in this area of Nørrebro. For example the kids can play on a Japanese octopus while the parents are hanging out by a Moroccan fountain.
The walk ends at BaNanna Park with the story of the significance of this park and the importance of activities in urban spaces when speaking of urban development in general.
