Presence can’t be downloaded – New exhibition shines a spotlight on how we interact in the physical space

Has physical presence become a luxury in the digital age? This is the question posed by Danish Architecture Center’s Meet Me Here exhibition opening during Copenhagen’s 3daysofdesign festival. The installation can be experienced from June 18, 2025 to January 4, 2026.  Meet Me Here is a physical and sensory reminder that presence can’t be streamed – only experienced. In real life. In collaboration with architecture and design studio Spacon, DAC presents an immersive installation that invites us to rediscover what happens when we’re physically present together.

When Architecture Promotes Community

Today, we’re clicking, swiping, and communicating digitally like never before, and this changes how we spend time together. We’re losing something important: meaningful physical presence, spontaneity, and those little chance encounters that create a sense of belonging.

According to a 2025 survey of more than 120,000 Danes conducted by philanthropic association Realdania, relationships and community are vital to our perceived quality of life. And it is the physical surroundings that allow such connections to occur, both planned and in passing.

Meet Me Here explores how architecture and design can create a space for exactly these types of encounters. A place where we can both stay put and move on. Where the architecture not only provides a backdrop but actively reinforces the impression we leave behind: of a smile, a nod, a conversation between two people who would otherwise never have met.

“The digital has become a natural part of our lives, but it’s in the physical space that we can really sense one another. For a long time now, our focus has been on creating architecture and design that’s aesthetically pleasing and sustainable. But these days, what we also really need is physical presence. With Meet Me Here, we want to show how spaces can strengthen interactions, mental wellbeing, and the sense of meaningful presence that so many are longing for,” explains Pernille Stockmarr, senior curator at Danish Architecture Center.

A Sensory Cleanse for Body and Mindfulness

Meet Me Here plays with well-known digital actions, translating them into architectural concepts, physical traces, and materials that encourage us to be physically present in the now. For instance, you can leave a handwritten note instead of a like, take a seat on a bench that invites interaction, or experience how your body and shadow become part of the space.

The exhibition celebrates those little, sensory moments where physical encounters give us what we may not realize we’re missing. It’s not about how long we stay, but how we are present while we’re there.

Meet Me Here is not a rejection of the digital world, but an exploration of the power of the physical space, which technology can’t replace. The guest moves through a sensory installation that stimulates the body and encourages them to pay attention to the importance of chance meetings and the impressions we leave behind in the space over time.

The exhibition is presented in DAC’s Stairway Gallery and is staged over five landings where different types of meaningful presence are explored – from a close encounter with yourself to chance meetings with others across time and place. Each landing reveals a new way to experience interactions and presence within the space.

Contribution to a Global Conversation

The Meet Me Here installation invites discourse about our shared future. It raises questions that are becoming more and more topical around the world: How do we create architecture and design that make it easier to meet, not just in terms of function but on a human scale. How can we make stronger connections with each other when our days are punctuated by notifications? And how do we create spaces where it feels natural to say: “Meet Me Here?”

This exhibition was created by Spacon in collaboration with Danish Architecture Center.
