The floating architecture moored at Refshaleøen provides the framework for a strong community. Six small floating islands are home to 100 people who live in Urban Rigger – modern, comfortable and functional housing – built from shipping containers. And landlubbers are welcome.
Urban Rigger is moored at Refshaleøen. You may have seen the six small light-blue islands made of shipping containers on your way to visit Reffen, La Banchina, lille bakery or one of the other local hotspots. The containers are floating, “future-fit” architecture that provide the framework for a unique urban lifestyle on the water.
Urban Rigger was designed by Bjarke Ingels in 2014. The vision was to demonstrate one solution to a set of challenges faced by many cities: insufficient space, lack of affordable housing, gray and dilapidated industrial harbors, and rising global sea levels.
Small and Comfortable on the Water
The rigs are first and foremost a lifestyle and housing form with plenty of fresh sea air, comfort and magnificent views – an exclusive community based on tiny living.
In addition to modern private apartments, each rig houses common areas with a courtyard, rooftop terrace, shared kitchen, storage room and laundry facilities. Most of these areas are actually underwater – inside the concrete platform.
Urban Rigger explores the social and health benefits of living on the water with a sharp focus on the most sustainable solutions. The rigs are all equipped with solar cells, seawater-based underfloor heating, sedum-based green roofs and a concrete foundation that promotes marine biodiversity and clean seawater.
