Film: Citizen Jane – The Woman Who Inspired Jan Gehl
Join us for a screening of the documentary Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, about the woman who challenged conventional ideas about how modern cities should be developed in 1960s New York.

Jane Jacobs fought for a city designed for people, everyday life, and vibrant streets. Her opponent was the powerful urban planner Robert Moses, who wanted to modernize New York with highways, large-scale developments, and widespread demolition.
The film paints a vivid picture of 1960s New York and the clash between two radically different visions of the city. A battle that remains relevant today: Who is the city really for? Jane Jacobs introduced the concept of Eyes on the Street. Her message was simple: People make streets safer. This idea inspired the young Jan Gehl, who, together with his wife Ingrid Gehl, began studying how people use and move through cities.
As an activist and author of the architectural classic The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs was a pioneer who put people at the heart of urban planning. She became a major inspiration for Jan Gehl, whose work you can currently explore in our exhibition Cities for People. That's why we're screening this film about the woman who helped change the future of New York.
