Guided tour of Cities for People – what makes a city a good place to live?

See the city through fresh eyes

Why do some places make us want to linger, while others make us hurry on? And how does the design of a city actually affect our well-being, health and sense of community?

On the tour, we take a closer look at questions such as:

• What makes an urban space feel safe, lively and pleasant to spend time in?
• How do streets, cycle paths, squares and green spaces affect our everyday lives?
• How do we create places where different people can meet and feel at home?
• Who is the city actually designed for – and who risks being overlooked?

One of DAC’s guides will take you through the exhibition and place the examples in a broader context. You will discover the ideas behind cities on a human scale, which Jan and Ingrid Gehl began developing in the 1960s and 1970s, and see how these ideas have since been applied and developed further in cities around the world.

Along the way, we look at cities including Copenhagen, New York, Sydney, Seattle, Buenos Aires and Shanghai, exploring what happens when cities are planned around people’s everyday lives. Through real-world examples, data and research, we gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the city’s physical environment and aspects of life such as physical activity, social interaction, mental well-being and inclusion.

In the exhibition, you can also experience for yourselves how different urban spaces can make us feel safe or unsafe – and how the same place can be experienced differently depending on factors such as age, gender and life circumstances.

The tour is suitable for study trips, families, groups of friends and corporate events. You will leave with fresh perspectives on the places you encounter every day – and, we hope, an eye for details in the city that you may not have noticed before.
