Sunset in Copenhagen: Where to Catch the City's Golden Hour

From waterfront promenades and parks to public squares and tucked-away street corners, this is your guide to evening sun and sunset in Copenhagen – where architecture, urban life, and the city's bright summer evenings come together in perfect harmony.

By Anna Skovby Hansen

Much of Copenhagen seems almost designed to make the most of the evening sun. Thanks to the city's relatively low skyline, sunlight slips effortlessly between buildings, across public squares, into quiet courtyards, and along the harbor's edge. The only trick is knowing where to settle in.

In this guide, you'll discover 12 handpicked locations across Copenhagen where you can enjoy the evening sun, take in the city, and watch its architecture transform as the day's final light washes over facades, the water, and the surrounding streets.

#1. Raise a Glass to More Than Just the Sunset

At Den Røde By in Nordhavn

In the late afternoon and early evening, sunshine pours across the square outside the craft beer bar Åben, where you can enjoy both bright sunshine and a perfectly poured pint. The building is part of Den Røde By ("The Red City"), a historic cluster of warehouses dating back to Nordhavn's days as a free port, still recognizable by its distinctive red brick architecture.

Around 4:00 p.m., office workers begin spilling out of the neighborhood's open-plan offices to kick off the evening with an after-work beer. But you don't need a blazer or business attire to fit in – sundresses, shorts, and sunglasses feel just as at home among the iconic red brick buildings, whose warm tones reflect beautifully off the silver-colored tables and chairs strategically arranged to follow the sun.

Nearby, you'll also find excellent sunset spots around Kronløbsøen, a little farther into Nordhavn. Marmormolen, next to UN City, is another great place to catch the late-day sun, though you'll want to bring your own food and drinks.

#2. Hunt Down the City's Best Sun-Drenched Patios

At Flæsketorvet in the Meatpacking District

Copenhagen's Meatpacking District, on the Vesterbro side of the city, is home to one of the city's greatest concentrations of sunny outdoor dining. Around Flæsketorvet in particular, the afternoon sun settles perfectly over the historic industrial buildings, which still retain their raw, functional character while somehow feeling remarkably welcoming.

As soon as the sun appears, every seat fills up. Picnic tables are quickly claimed by hungry, thirsty Copenhageners, all competing – quite literally – for the best spot in the sun.

Take your pick of restaurants like Kødbyens Fiskebar, Gorilla, or Gaza Grill if you want dinner with sunshine on your face. If you're simply after a refreshing treat, Ismageriet's legendary ice cream is always worth the stop.

But people don't come here for the sunshine alone. They come for the lively, festive atmosphere that spills through the streets and between the old warehouse buildings. It's the kind of place that reminds you just how special summer in Copenhagen can be – and that nobody intends to waste a single sunny evening.

#3. Copenhagen's Pyramids at Golden Hour

Along the waterfront at Papirøen

Papirøen's striking new architecture, designed by the Danish firm Cobe, draws inspiration from the historic warehouses of nearby Christianshavn. The island is also home to Copenhagen's new waterfront cultural and bathing center, designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Papirøen – literally "Paper Island" – takes its name from the days when the area served as a storage site for rolls of paper destined for Denmark's newspaper industry.

With its almost pyramid-like buildings as a dramatic backdrop, Papirøen feels made for the evening sun, evoking the atmosphere of warmer climates. A series of terraces steps down toward the harbor, offering plenty of places to sit back, watch life on the water, and enjoy the changing colors as daylight slowly fades.

Just next door, Broens Street Food serves a wide selection of food and drinks, while colorful Nyhavn sits directly across the harbor. Papirøen is easily connected to the rest of the city via the Inner Harbour Bridge (Inderhavnsbroen). The walk across the bridge is an attraction in itself, offering one of Copenhagen's finest harbor views, with both the Copenhagen Opera House and the Royal Danish Playhouse shimmering in the evening light.

    On top of DAC

Even though Copenhagen gives the sun plenty of room to reach down into its streets, it always helps to get up high, where nothing stands between you and the day's final hours of light.

Atop BLOX, the Danish Architecture Center has two large rooftop terraces, with views over Copenhagen Harbour on one side and Christiansborg Palace and the sunset on the other.

Every Friday during the summer months, you can enjoy the evening sun and sweeping views from DAC's Rooftop Café, when we host Summer in the City with cold drinks, a lounge atmosphere, and a DJ set.

#4. A Taste of Southern Europe in the Heart of Copenhagen

In front of Frederiksberg Palace

At Frederiksberg Gardens, you can soak up the evening sun from the lawn in front of Frederiksberg Palace, surrounded by perfectly manicured grass and towering trees that frame the palace from end to end.

A fountain bubbles gently in the background while a winding stream meanders through the park. Altogether, it feels like a little slice of Southern Europe tucked into the middle of Copenhagen.

Children – and anyone young at heart – run barefoot across the grass while others spread out blankets with wine and picnic snacks. Bring your biggest sun hat, lean back, and enjoy feeling just a little bit royal for an afternoon.

The gardens close at 10:00 p.m. during the summer months, but by then you've already caught most of the evening light. For the very last rays of sunshine, head across Roskildevej to Søndermarken. The lawn above The Cisterns is one of the city's finest sunset picnic spots, with the iconic Zoo Tower rising in the background.

#5. Indulge Your Inner Parisian

The Sculpture Garden at SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark

If you've ever lingered by the fountains in Paris's Jardin des Tuileries, this spot is sure to feel familiar. In the museum garden outside SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark, you can enjoy the evening sun while relaxing beside the tranquil reflecting pool.

Pack a baguette and your favorite picnic fixings to complete the illusion, then sit back as the warm sunlight washes over the pale stone surrounding the water.

As evening approaches, the museum's entrance begins to glow with soft golden light. Ornate details and stately columns become even more pronounced, while the warm-colored facade and broad staircase invite you to linger a little longer – perhaps with a book in hand or simply gazing across the street toward the King's Garden.

Behind the museum, Østre Anlæg offers another excellent opportunity to catch the last sunlight in a greener, more secluded setting.

#6. Orange Wine and an Orange Sunset

At La Banchina on Refshaleøen / Sun until just after 9:00 p.m.

If natural wine and Copenhagen's more laid-back, unpolished side are your thing, this is the place to be.

La Banchina is a tiny turquoise gem on Refshaleøen where the pace slows down and the sunset takes center stage. Order a glass of wine, find a seat, and settle into the atmosphere. You can even take a dip from the bathing pier before drying off in the evening sun. Or simply stay where you are and watch the light gradually shift as day gives way to night.

The seating is close together, and that's part of the charm. Shoulders brush, glances turn into conversations, and strangers strike up chats – even in a city whose residents are famously reserved. Perhaps a glass of wine and a little sunshine are all it takes.

The best seats disappear quickly, so arrive early or be prepared to compete for them. Your reward is one of Copenhagen's most spectacular sunsets, when both the sky and the glass in front of you glow in shades of orange.

#7. Urban Sunshine

Friheden in Nørrebro, by Palæstinas Plads

If understated charm and a relaxed, rustic atmosphere are more your style, Friheden in Nørrebro is an ideal gathering place. Tucked beside Nørrebro Park between Hillerødgade and Den Røde Plads, this green pocket of the city has the easygoing feel of a small outdoor festival. Friheden occupies a shed-like building, with skate ramps buzzing with activity just outside on sunny days.

Grab a seat outdoors, let the afternoon sun find you, and linger as the light slowly disappears behind pine trees and patio umbrellas. Sunbeams filter through the branches, creating scattered patches of golden light. The surrounding buildings are fairly dense, so if you're chasing direct sunshine, you'll need to seek out the gaps.

#8. Canal Views and Evening Sunshine

Christianshavn – Overgaden Oven Vandet

Take a seat along Christianshavn Canal, where Overgaden Oven Vandet enjoys sunlight later than many other streets in the city. The colorful row houses lining the canal only add to the summer atmosphere.

Boats bob gently side by side while sunlight dances across the water, casting shimmering reflections onto the surrounding facades. You can perch right on the quay or settle onto one of the many benches lining the canal.

If you're determined to catch every last ray of sunshine, head to the corner of Torvegade and Overgaden Oven Vandet, beside the white-and-yellow building that houses Lagkagehuset – the flagship bakery that gave its name to Denmark's now well-known bakery chain.

#9. Singing the Praises of the Sun

Opera Park on Holmen

Opera Park is one of Copenhagen's newest green spaces – a meticulously designed landscape that immediately invites you to slow down and relax.

Spending an afternoon or evening here feels almost theatrical. The sun plays the leading role, while the carefully curated plantings provide the stage set that ties the entire scene together.

Having a green oasis like Opera Park in the middle of the city feels truly special. Find one of the secluded benches tucked among the gardens or sit right by the waterfront, where sweeping views open toward Ofelia Plads, with Amalienborg Palace and Frederik's Church (the Marble Church) rising in the distance.

Once you've soaked up enough sunshine, take a leisurely stroll around Holmen. Beautifully preserved historic buildings line the streets, giving the neighborhood its distinctive character. And if you get hungry, Broens Street Food is just a five-minute walk away.

#10. Lakeside Views with the Sun on Your Face

Along the shore of Sankt Jørgens Lake at the Planetarium

Outside the Planetarium, where Frederiksberg meets Vesterbro on the edge of Sankt Jørgens Lake, the evening sun lingers beautifully.

Claim a lounge chair or settle onto the broad steps in front of the Planetarium's distinctive building – its sharply angled cylindrical form serving as one of the area's architectural landmarks – and let the sun warm your face. Meanwhile, city life unfolds around you as runners circle the lakes and friends stroll past deep in conversation.

Stay long enough and you'll witness the transition from golden evening light to a sky filled with stars – almost like a performance continuing inside the Planetarium itself.

#11. Picture-Perfect Atmosphere and Evening Sun

Krøyers Plads in Christianshavn

On warm summer days, Krøyers Plads can feel like a human anthill. The quay and wooden boardwalk fill with towels, sunbathers, and swimmers eager to get in the water.

During the day, people lie shoulder to shoulder, letting the sun do its work. But the area is just as appealing in the evening, when you want to squeeze the last rays out of the day as the light softens and the UV index begins to drop.

The architecture around the square is a mix of modern apartment buildings and historic warehouses, with views across the inner harbor toward the patinated green Toldkammerbygning, the former customs house on the opposite side of the water.

Bring a deck of Uno cards or a backgammon set, maybe something cold to drink, and settle in on the quay.

#12. Happy Hour Meets Golden Hour

On the quay by Reffen on Refshaleøen

Refshaleøen was once home to the vast B&W shipyard. Today, it has become a magnet for summer-loving Copenhageners and visitors in search of sunshine, water, and a little more room to spread out.

On the quay in front of Reffen Street Food, lounge chairs line up side by side throughout the summer, ready to be claimed. Lean back, let the sun warm your cheeks, and take your time deciding which food stall should handle dinner.

As you sit there, the sun sinks over the harbor and the view opens into a sweeping panorama, with Langelinie and Kastellet in the distance and the city's spires and towers forming a beautiful silhouette all the way until sunset.
