Charles Landry is one of the most influential thinkers who has shaped the transformation of cities over the past 50 years. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was a pioneer of a new form of conversation about urban life, creativity, and culture. He is the author of several books, including “The Creative City: A Guidebook for Urban Innovators” and “The Art of City Making,” and as advisor and inspirer he has had a major impact on cities that have successfully transformed their culture, organization, public spaces, and self-perception, including places such as Bilbao, Berlin, and Adelaide.

This DAC Dialog opens with a keynote by Charles Landry on The Art of City Making, with insights, reflections, and a self-critical look at 50 years of work in 20 different countries. Landry reflects on the ideas, ambitions and assumptions that have shaped contemporary city making. Which ideas have translated into meaningful action? Which delivered real results—and which failed to live up to their promise? And where do we go from here?

These reflections form the starting point for a wider conversation about the present and future of urban development. How will we look back at the cities and neighborhoods we are shaping today? Which projects, ideas or places might become tomorrow’s regrets—and why? And how can we learn from past mistakes to shape more resilient, inclusive and successful cities for

In addition to Charles Landrys keynote we have a panel discussion reflecting on placemaking in Denmark and Copenhagen in past, present and future. The panel includes:

Helle Søholt, Founding Partner and CEO of Gehl. She started Gehl with Professor Jan Gehl in 2000 and is internationally respected for her expert work in the field of urban design and urban development.

Frederik Fryland, Associate urban development and investments at Urban Partners. He is also chair of urban development under the Green Building Council Denmark. He is one of the young, ambitious and opinionated voices in Denmark.

This DAC Dialog will be in English only.
