So Danish! – The Danish Way of Living
The teaching programme So Danish! at the Danish Architecture Center invites students in Grades 7–10 and upper secondary education to explore Danish housing architecture, community, everyday life, and sustainable ways of living.
What makes Danish housing so special? How do our homes reflect the values and communities we build our lives around?
In So Danish!, we explore how the design of a home isn’t just about walls, roofs, and rooms—it’s also about people, encounters, and the ways we live together.

The programme takes you on a journey through the development of Danish housing—from Viking longhouses to today’s sustainable solutions. The focus is the “DNA” of Danish housing: how our way of living is shaped by society’s values and needs, and how architecture doesn’t just create a setting, but can also strengthen community and well-being.
Good architecture is about durability, functionality, and beauty—but in Denmark there is also a distinct fourth element: the social dimension. Here, people and community are at the center. How does architecture create spaces where people can live together, meet, and thrive?
In the programme, you’ll work with concrete examples of Danish housing architecture and reflect on how housing types such as workers’ housing, the single-family house, and cohousing have responded to the challenges of their time. Through dialogue, sketching, and creative activities, you’ll explore how the homes of the future can be shaped with a focus on sustainability, community, and people’s needs.
Together we ask: What is special about the Danish way of living—and how can architecture continue to shape a better everyday life for all of us?
