The City from Above
Come explore how a city is created—and what it looks like from above! In The City from Above, you’ll play urban planners for a day and design a new city that connects everything from homes and roads to parks and public spaces.

We’ll take a closer look at what makes up a city and what it needs to function. What comes first—roads or buildings? How do parks and water create life and community? Together, we’ll draw a large city plan in a guided process, where each function has its own color. You’ll place the city’s key parts, create connections between them, and discover how a city comes to life.
When the city is finished, you’ll choose where you would like to live and reflect on what makes that particular place special. The program challenges you to think like architects and urban planners, develop ideas, and draw the city from a bird’s-eye view.
Along the way, you’ll strengthen fine motor skills, gain a deeper understanding of how architecture works through functions and connections, and learn to put words to the city’s elements and why they matter.
And of course—you’ll take your city plan home!
