What Is a World Capital of Architecture?

Every three years, UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA) award the title World Capital of Architecture to a leading global city. Copenhagen was named World Capital of Architecture in 2023, based on the city’s strong traditions in sustainable and democratic architecture.

What Did the 2023 World Capital of Architecture Mean for Copenhagen?

The title World Capital of Architecture is a major international recognition. However, it also comes with significant responsibility.

As host city of the UIA World Congress of Architects, Copenhagen in 2023 focused on the theme “Sustainable Futures – Leave No One Behind.” The goal was to highlight how architecture and urban development can contribute to achieving the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ambitions were therefore high, as Copenhagen hosted a wide range of events and public programs throughout 2023, attracting visitors from around the world.

It was no coincidence that Copenhagen was selected. The Danish capital was chosen for its innovative urban development and strong traditions of democratic and sustainable architecture, which continue to inspire cities worldwide.

The Collaboration Behind World Capital of Architecture 2023

The designation of Copenhagen as World Capital of Architecture was the result of a collaboration between the Danish Association of Architects, Realdania, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Wonderful Copenhagen.

The partners viewed hosting the UIA World Congress as an opportunity to engage both citizens and industry professionals in important and timely conversations about architecture and urban development.

Throughout the architecture year, Copenhagen not only showcased the city’s strengths, but also explored areas for improvement and opened discussions about how cities can develop in a more sustainable direction.
