In Christianshavn, you will find Kanalhuset, a hotel located in a building dating back to 1754 with a long history as a boarding school, a hospital and museum. During Open House, you can experience the cozy, newly refurbished rooms, which are normally only open to customers looking to rent spaces.

The noble yellow building on Overgaden Oven Vandet is one of the most distinctive buildings in Christianshavn, which primarily comprises narrow townhouses. You may have visited the location once, back when it was the Royal Danish Naval Museum. The Rococo-style building was designed by architect Johan Christian Conradi – and is considered his seminal work.

Sailors of All Ages

The building has a long maritime heritage. It was originally built for the Det Kongelige Opfostringshus, a boarding school where boys as young as 5 years of age lived and learned to become sailors. Later, it became Søkvæsthuset – a navy hospital. And at one time, there was also a prison in part of the building. However, a distinguished couple, playwright Johan Ludvig and actress Johanne Luise Heiberg, has also lived in one of the wings.

Communal Dining and Vintage Decor

In 2016, the founder of the Tiger (now Flying Tiger) retail chain, Lennart Lajboschitz, purchased the buildings and embarked on comprehensive renovations. He and his family live in one of the wings, while the main building has been transformed into a cozy hotel comprising both rooms and apartments. Similar to Folkehuset Absalon, a former church and now community center also owned by Lajboschitz, the focus here is on a homey atmosphere, with vintage decor and colorful wallpaper, as well as communal dining and affordable morning yoga for locals and tourists alike.

During Open House you can experience the beautiful rooms that are normally only open to people looking to rent spaces for birthdays, events and the like. Take a look inside and be inspired by the creative decor and gentle renovations carried out with respect for the spirit of the location.
