The future of Christiania

The debate on Christiania has raged for decades, and the existence of the freetown has almost always been under threat. Some are infuriated that residents of Christiania live in one of Copenhagen’s most attractive areas without having to pay rent. While others see Christiania as a symbol of Danish openness and inclusiveness. An agreement was concluded in 2021 giving residents a state-guaranteed loan of DKK 67 million and allowing them to buy the entire listed area. In return, residents have to designate what corresponds to 30% of Christiania’s housing stock for social housing.
